Richard A. Clapp devotes virtually all of his practice to matters in litigation. He has extensive jury trial experience and has tried well over 150 cases to a jury with a remarkable success ratio. Representative cases which Mr. Clapp has handled include fire, explosion, professional errors and omissions litigation, products liability, catastrophic injury, complex insurance coverage matters, construction litigation, automobile liability, environmental and toxic waste litigation, asbestos litigation, legal and medical malpractice, malicious prosecution, age, sex and employment discrimination, arson, declaratory judgments, defense of alleged insurance bad faith, subrogations, contractors’ liability, oil field accidents, agricultural accidents, liquor liability (dram shop), wrongful death, and personal injury.

The author of North Dakota Law For Claims Professionals, excerpts of closing arguments presented by Mr. Clapp in various trials have been published in Stein, Closing Argument, The Art and The Law. Mr. Clapp is listed in Marquis Who’s Who in American Law.

Mr. Clapp is admitted to the Bar in North Dakota and Minnesota, the United States District Courts for the States of North Dakota and Minnesota and the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. His practice extends beyond the States of North Dakota and Minnesota to other jurisdictions throughout the United States.

A 1976 graduate, Mr. Clapp received a Juris Doctor with Distinction from the University of North Dakota School of Law. He attended undergraduate school at Hamline University, St. Paul, Minnesota; the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota; and the University of North Dakota.

While attending law school, Mr. Clapp was a senior editor of the North Dakota Law Review and clerked for two and one-half years with a Grand Forks law firm.

Mr. Clapp is a former president of the Lake Region Bar Association, a former member of the North Dakota Bar Association Inquiry Committee East, a member of the American Bar Association, the State Bar Association of North Dakota, the Grand Forks County Bar Association, American Bar Association Section of Litigation, the Defense Research Institute (DRI), and has been a member of the Continuing Legal Education Committee of the North Dakota Bar Association.

Mr. Clapp has taught Trial Advocacy at the University of North Dakota School of Law and lectures frequently on litigation and trial techniques, discovery and effective settlement methods.

Mr. Clapp has received Martindale Hubbell’s highest rating of AV, has been designated a Great Plains Super Lawyer and has been listed in the The Best Lawyer in America. He is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates and has served on ABOTA’s National Board of Directors

Mr. Clapp is certified as Civil Trial Lawyer Specialist by both the Minnesota State Bar Association and the National Board of Trial Advocates.

Mr. Clapp has tried numerous non-jury cases to the Court and has been a frequent participant in alternative dispute resolution proceedings including mediations and arbitrations. He has received and completed certified civil mediation training and is a Qualified Neutral under Rule 114 of the Minnesota General Rules of Practice.
